2016VGMA: “Stand-up Comedians would host better”

The African E-News

Ghanaian Stand-up comedian, Khemikal has noted that although this year’s VGMA ceremony was amazing, yet it would have been much amazing if the hosts on the night had great sense of humor.

Chris Attoh and Naa Ashorkor hosted the 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards which came last Saturday, May 8, 2016.

According to him, although Chris Attoh and Naa Ashokor were a great duo with an outstanding CV noting them for hosting events, “I believe that if a host skilled with humor was paired with either of the two – preferably a stand-up comedian,  it would have stirred up the excitement at the 2016 VGMA.”

Adding, “without doubt this year’s edition was as amazing as the previous editions, yet the hosts of the event seemed to have left the audience at some point in time bored and in turn, they (audience) became unresponsive when the hosts dared to engage them in a couple of activities.

“That was my observation and to some extent it beats my mind because you (audience) went there to enjoy so why the reluctance when the hosts ask that you do something? But I won’t blame the audience, the hosts had less humorous ‘vibes’ to keep the audience active through to the end of the show aside the fact that Naa’s ‘facial paint’ caused a bit of laughter in the auditorium,” he relayed his displeasure to

“There is a tall list of comedians in its industry cycle; a lot of options to choose from the likes of DKB, Foster Romanus, Khemikal (myself), OB, and the only female comedian, Jacinta,” he noted.

“Undisputedly,” Khemikal said, “the organizers of the musical ceremony has proven to be one of the most exciting events on the Ghanaian entertainment calendar, that brings together music lovers nationwide and fans of the respective nominated musicians as well as foreigners from all parts of the world.”

Hence, “if we are indeed learning to set up stages like that of international ceremonies- BET Awards, Oscars, Grammys etc.; why not also learn to involve more of Stand-up comedians like the organizers of these events does? Let’s not forget, entertainment isn’t just about music,” Khemikal told
