Beads play an essential role in the human life; be it worn on the ankle, neck, waist or wrist. It is a small, decorative object that is formed in a variety of shapes and sizes of a material such as glass, plastic, or wood, and that is pierced for threading or stringing.
Many are the Bead works we see at the Art Centre in Accra as well as other hand-made craft shops in Ghana, Africa and beyond.
With several arts and crafty ways of creating fashion wares with beads; BeadsByMum can not be exempted as she weaves and designs dresses and slippers ‘Chaleywotey’ with the beads strung onto thread or soft, flexible materials or adhered to its surface.
Created by Vivian Akushika, BeadsByMum aims at reaching the African and beyond markets, as “I envision seeing my product, ‘BeadsByMum’ become a house hold name and a brand which best represents African culture through fashion.”
“Although my major challenge is the material cost due to the inflation which affects production cost, but I still hope for better days ahead,” she added.
According to the BeadsByMum producer, “I get inspired by my passion for authentic African products which portray our culture and fashion.”
BeadsByMum products are made of mixed foreign and local beads, local print fabrics and ‘chaleywotey’ of all brands and colours.
Quoting late Maya Angelou on beads; “the most important thing I can tell you about aging is this: If you really feel that you want to have an off-the-shoulder blouse and some big beads and thong sandals and a dirndl skirt and a magnolia in your hair, do it. Even if you’re wrinkled.”
And indeed BeadsByMum boldly exhibits African design and style by making us magnificent.
